[Cardillo] is a Sicilian architect trained in this school, who has nevertheless built his working life, nemo propheta in patria at least at the beginning, by building relations on the international stage, with an extraordinary recognisability that we rarely find in comparable situations here in Sicily.

Antonino Cardillo

I was born in 1975, as Pink Floyd were recording Shine On You Crazy Diamond. This song, dedicated to absence, embodies a dimension of emptiness that characterised the 1970s. I start with this reflection because every life, every experience, is partly shaped by the circumstances in which it takes form. In my case, these circumstances were the 1970s, the city of Trapani in Sicily, and a persistent sense of estrangement from the place where I was born. It felt as if I did not belong to that context, a feeling I might describe as a perceived distance between myself and my surroundings.

My dears, you understand, I am moved. Happy, moved, by this most luminous path that has carried me, once so very young, to eighty-four years of age, and Antonio still here. [I shall dwell] on some of the wonderful things he has said and that I share; indeed I shall say it at once, for fear of forgetting. He spoke of imagination: let us remember Einstein, when he said [that imagination carries us everywhere]. He meant this: that is how one flies, only in this way does one fly, everywhere, even while living in a small place unknown to everyone.
