Invited by Professors Ana Araujo and Takero Shimazaki to contribute to The Language of Flowers, the 2013 Intermediate Unit 2 programme at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, Antonino Cardillo participated as a guest lecturer. He curated the study trip to Sicily, introduced his work to the students, and actively engaged in design reviews and critical discussions throughout the unit. Two days before the lecture, his manifesto opened Fulcrum, the school’s free weekly, in an issue made possible by Alexandra Savtchenko-Belskaia and left out in the Architectural Association’s bar.

Events List, Term 1, Week 8 of the Architectural Association School of Architecture featuring Antonino Cardillo
Long ago, mankind celebrated the mystery of creation by constructing houses for invisible beings called Gods. Architecture transfigured trees and stones into something grandiose and communicative. It was a universal language, like music, and following this rationale the most ancient traditions were stratified.
Recently we went on a trip to Sicily as a group, and this evening is meant to recall some of the things we were thinking, discussing and seeing there, but also to go a little deeper into an understanding of the unit, the school’s teaching studio, and of what we do in it, and to hear about the work of Antonino Cardillo, who has generously joined us tonight.
About ten years ago, I decided to start a new chapter in my life. I moved to Rome and spent nine years there, immersed in the study of ancient architecture. I sought a deeper understanding, an alternative to contemporary architectural practice.
