Congress

For five days the Baglio Florio, the nineteenth-century farmstead that stands inside the archaeological park of Selinunte, housed an international congress convened by the Associazione Italiana di Architettura e Critica with presS/Tfactory. The programme alternated three registers: critics, guests and, under the name of Talents, some twenty practices under thirty-five gathered from Ukraine to South Korea, from Mexico to Malta. Around them spoke Daniel Libeskind, James Wines, Stefano Boeri, Mario Cucinella, Neil Leach, Hans Ibelings, Bill Menking and Aaron Levy; the afternoons moved to Castelvetrano and closed with a visit to the temples. Antonino Cardillo read on the morning of the second day, in the first panel of Talents, alongside Frida Escobedo and Gilad-Shiff Architecture: the panel was presented by Prestinenza Puglisi, president of AIAC, with Valerio Paolo Mosco as critic and Luca Maria Fabris in the chair. The days opened with the salutations of Caterina Greco, superintendent of the park, and Alberto Ditta, president of the Order of Architects of Trapani.

When I was 17 I came across this phrase: ‘Italy without Sicily leaves no image in the soul: this is the key to everything’. Goethe wrote it on 13 April, 1787 in his Sicilian travel diary during his stay in Palermo. For years I have tried to understand the reason for such a neat yet at times surprising affirmation.
